I still have a tower that works fine . I bought it new in '98 . That one got shut down every night .
The machines I use now are tossed together from a multitude of doners and they get shut down every night , too . Never had a problem with anything 'giving out'.
Although I have seen it happen to other folks . I don't know what their practices were . |

Thats Great! They dont make them like they used to !!! (I think...)
now that i think about it.... lets "say" the odds are 1 in 5 that this happens to. Since I repair computers, I think I just happen to see that 5th computer more often..
Matainance and climate also has a lot to do with it.. I've learned that since i dont have A/C, and my windows are open with fans running, that i MUST clean (dirt, dust bunnys) my machines every 6 months... back when i had central air, once a year was more than enough...
hmmm, another thing could be...

These computers that we "toss togeather" by RECYCLING doners, are proven parts! Mostly the machines i service are OEM machines that the customer bought new or used... (GO GREEN! RECYCLE!)

Hopefully , you're going to see more of those 5th machines . After all , you have a sign out asking for them ...
And , you make a real good point about the 'parts ' being proven . Time tested . |

Surge protectors only protect from line power surges, I was really talking about just the jolt of electricity that hits the circuits when you fire that mother up. I use good surge protectors on all my expensive electronics, our power supply sucks around here, they must be doing their job since I have to replace them like every two years since they become loaded. Anyone know how to drain them so they can suck up more?
My last computer I bought at a garage sale for $25.00 bucks cost me $100.00 to get it re-formatted but it was still going when I gave it to a friend who didn't have one and my son gave me his tower. Another friend just recently installed a bigger memory in it so I'm good to go for awhile. I am gonna have to think about replacing my key board, I think I've worn it out. |

A more accurate description might be "inrush" current.
Most gear blows up when first turning on.The power supply capacitors are all flat, and get charged up slam bang, putting a great stress on the rest of the power supply. This causes an internal surge in the piece of equipment that can kill any marginal devices.
Whenever I set up large A/V, telecommunications systems, or whatever, I like to leave them on once they are setup for the duration of the event, when possible.
Now, as far as leaving equipment on year round, electrolytic capacitors actually can deteriorate if not discharged occasionally. Cycling power once a week or so is often recommended. |

Not really... I do it for friends and family.. I use word of mouth for my advertising.. It keeps the numbers low and the quality of work high. its more of a spare time thing... (which is most of my time, plus its easy money!)

You hit it spot on!!! I've been seeing a lot of motherboards with blown caps lately.. I belive thats exactly what it is... many temp cycles make the component weak, then one day you hit the power button and poof, the inrush blowes it..

I do the same thing at my shows. I want the "gremlins" to come out of the woodwork before show time! (since touring concert gear lives 96% of its life in an unpowerd state in storage or in a truck..) the good thing is that normally the gear will be power cycled several times during setup once its warm, (shutdowns due to people tapping power..) when this happens i end up finding many problems, again before showtime which is good!

I did not know that. it makes sense! I do power down my computer gear at least once every 7-14 days, (when i leave to do a show) so i have never had that problem.. Otherwise i leave everything on.. my server is just a storage/media server, so it also gets shutdown with my PC.. So i guess the more accurate way I should put it would be 24-7_290ish nonconsecutive days a year..

Is it really that bad out there?

Yes, I built quite a few computers as well, beginning back in the 8086 XT days through the 286, 386, 486, all the Pentiums, and a bunch of the AMDs too. I got tired of it, but it suited the intended purpose, as I'm actually pretty good at digital audio and video and other high tech formats for an old guy. |

Gene, Give yourself a pat on the back!!! As our industry (entertainment) is moving more towards Digital/computers than analog I see more older Engineers becoming more lost. I think the reason is because their afraid of the technology because they dont understand it and never pickup the manual!
I comend all you older guys on that! You've kept up with the technoligy!
I know that keeping this place up and running is a lot of work! I really like what you all have done here! I'm really glad i found this site! It makes me want to buy a cb of my own! |

I am having an issue when I enter a post. After typing a couple of paragraphs, further typing is inhibited in that whatever I type is not displayed. I know it is entered because it will show up after I post it, but since I can't see it when I am typing, it is prone to mistakes. I have had this problem ever since joining this forum in June 2010. I initially figured this was a limitation that was forced on newbies, but it hasn't gone away after 161 posts. I asked pd750 about it and he informs me that it must be a server issue because this forum is not intended to act as I described. He further asked me to state my problem on this thread which I am doing now. One workaround he suggested was to type the posting in Word and then copy and paste it into the forum. That should help, but if I want to have images in the post, then I don't think that will work.

That's a totally new one and sounds like it's a problem with your browser. When you are typing in the box, you are totally typing on your own computer and in your browser. It only connects to the server when you hit submit, or any of the buttons that provoke a response over the internet. Typing in the box is totally a local thing on your computer, there is no server interaction at all during the typing. |

I have had the same trouble.
It appears that once you totally fill up the text box and then start getting long winded, it will not show what you are typing.
I just hit the preview button and then correct my boo boos. |

That's interesting. I wonder what I have to do to my browser (IE8) to make this problem go away.
Old Timer, I have done like you say at times by previewing the post and then correcting errors that I couldn't see before. The problem is that if I want to make corrections near the end of my post, they become hidden as soon as I put the cursor there so I am then just guessing at the corrections. |

Its an IE8 thing.... I was having the same problem. It has something to do with the scrolling. once the box is filled up it won't automatically scroll down. Instead it jumps down when you type a letter then immediately jump back to the top... It drove me nuts.... Went back to Firefox. (I like the spell checker..) |

If you repeatedly get debug mode notices, you should stop posting or accessing, and wait a while until an admin goes in and fixes it. Even if you do get a message posted, it could be lost or worse, the tables can get so corrupted they need to be restored from backups. |
