Well, that being the case could you please put your bike type/year in your signature? One of the few requirements around here.... Very Happy

It is required for my participation? Kinda redundant isn't it? If I didn't own a DOHC could I not share my knowledge? If I owned a Yamaha would I be barred. If I owned fifteen bikes wouldn't I always have to specify which bike I was talking about? Would make sense if I was asking tons of questions on how to fix it but I don't think that I have to date. Plus I know it just annoys the hell out of ya'll and I ain't no Lemming. Smile

Well, we ask everyone else to do it, and we do it ourselves... are you "special"?

Yes, it makes more sense when one is asking questions. I can't count how many times myself and others have spent considerable time posting an answer only to discover it was for the wrong model of bike. And that's with the minor differences between our bikes. But it also makes sense for folks answering to help the questioner weigh occasional conflicting responses. And it's what all the cool kids are doing.

It's redundant and for the reasons I've stated. It's your site, your rules and since I don't succumb to peer pressure I must say aurevoir. It's been nice visiting with ya. Special? I must be cause I get to ride the short bus. Wink

I understand you don't really need much advice on how these bikes work, and you won't be asking many questions in the blind.

But, we get all kinds here, and putting the model in the sig is very useful when trying to help people with their bikes. Even if they say what bike it is in the beginning of a thread, there might be some fact on page three of that thread that gets messed up if someone doesn't remember the year or model of the bike. I don't like to have to go back and look for it, and I can't remember each bike in each thread.

We didn't start asking for this information out of some need to try to regulate the masses, or some nazi perversion, we did it to help people more easily. Most of the folks that come here with a big problem just have one Honda DOHC bike. And they are often very confused, anxious, and unfamiliar with everything and have misconceptions. Being able to know that they have a 1980 CB900C can be very helpful for many questions right off.

Now you say maybe some folks have several DOHCs? Well, they don't usually have nearly as many n00bie questions, and they are more likely to be clear on the model. They also don't usually mind showing off their stable on each post.

And if they have a Yamaha, a Harley, and 2 Mopeds, I don't care if they put them in their sig or not. I'm, not likely to be trying to give them any help with one of those.

I don't really think it's that much to ask to have everybody put their bike in their sig as a courtesy. We had the same issue with the location info, and Dave figured a way to make it necessary to complete registration. Maybe we'll have to do that for this issue too. It's really just a courtesy for everybody to comply. But if one guy comes along and doesn't do it, it leaves a glaring mark for the next rebel to achieve too, and I don't need it. I don't want to be the man. I'm a rebel too.

You do what you gotta do. I'll do what I think is best for the site, but I'll still be sorry to see you go if that's what you do.. Wink

He's got a bike, he hosts a run every year, too. But he wants to go his way, do it his way, not ours, and I can understand that. He's not happy with 2nd place, doesn't want people telling him how to act. I'm not real sure anyone does, quite frankly. He already has a position at another bike forum, maybe he's more comfortable there. I tried to do what I could to make him feel welcome here though. But I'm not going to suggest special rules for him so we can steal him from his other obligation. We are fully staffed currently. And we tend to promote from within.

But this isn't just my site, or Dave's, or John's, or anyone else's... it's ours, and there are several very good reasons for our way of doing things that are several years old, before he came along. This isn't our first site, and we want to keep it going, even if one of us disappears.

We stick together on these things. It's for the longevity of the site. If it was just my site, several things would be different, but I go with the flow. I don't (usually) make a stink about it, I accept it and protect it. So, if I have to conform, so does he in my mind. I'm sure the other admins have their own take on it, but we usually keep our heads pretty together on this stuff. Wink

why's my front brake caliper or calipers on my bike sticking?

why are my brake piston or pistons not working?

do i have air shocks? what shocks? front shocks are called forks , do have a bike with air assist or do you have rear air shocks?

etc etc etc

adding a bike model/size/year is so much easier than reading back 10 pages or asking 3 times in a thread reply

we dont ask much of members, just a couple things to clarify questions

if I can do it , anyone can

and thats the tooth Very Happy

you have added a heap to this place, i hate to see you or anyone else leave..thanks for the help so far

Hey look, Gene nailed it I hate to be pushed. You guys are way cool and I have been made to feel more than welcome. I have a genuine passion for these old bikes and really feel for the poor guy that just wants to make it run. I know what it's like to be all alone when trying to figure out how to fix em. I don't just throw out possible solutions to increase my post score (I hate that counter). I very often go to bed wondering if the advise that I suggested was the best. My reference books and manuals are dogeared, I have note books full of hand written notes of little bits and pieces of information. I may re-read a post several times to try and make sure that I fully understand his problem and the make, model and year involved. I'll ask for clarification if need be. They don't have to make it easy or convenient for me to assist them, I have no schedule, I have no quota, I don't even have to answer. I do this because I enjoy having that guy log back in and saying "hey it worked".

post counters are a bitch,

if you are helpful and build posts , it looks like you are an old fart setting in a basement , with nothing to do

or if you have no posts, it looks like you are dead weight

i also am not prone to like being pushed or run over
