New member from Louisiana (New Orleans)

Hi guys!

My name is Lawson; I’m a student at the University of New Orleans studying mechanical engineering. I was given a 1980 CB900C about 8 months ago. It has been worked on off and on but because I have had a bike to ride up till recently it was of no real priority and I only worked on it a few times (got it running, basically) Rolling Eyes

. The bike sat outside for about 5 years before I got it… to say it was not in good shape, well…

Now I only have the CB for a bike and because I have moved closer to school (I was commuting 1hr25m ish 4 days a week...) and have about triple the rent I basically have zero cash - - - what I’m saying is I’m a typical college student with a millionaire’s imagination and a paupers wallet.

I’ve begun working on the CB with the intent to get it on the road as cheaply and quickly as possible (it really doesn’t need much to be ridable). Not having a bike is killing me and having a not-so-pretty bike should be great! With any luck they will steal the nice pretty new bike instead of mine haha.

I have a few parts I’m looking for right now if they can be donated to the cause (or cheaply sold to me =):

Front calipers (current plan is to rebuild mine… but they are messed up.)

F. mast. Cylinder (yeah, this thing is shot. Not rebuildable, I need something new)

Hi Lawson. Nice to have ya.
I just redid some calipers, so I can give you some pointers.

Leave the calipers hooked up to the lines and M.C.
Remove them from the caliper mounts, remove the pads then squeeze the lever to pop the pistons out.
One might come out before the other, go slow, and use something to jam the first one up before it comes right out. Unless of course yours are single piston, which I think they are.

But, you said your M.C. is screwed right?
Remove calipers from bike, remove pads.
Get a grease gun, take off the nipple fitting, then screw it into the banjo bolt holes.
The grease gun is N.P.T. and the banjo hole is metric, but you can just get the first couple of threads started.
Pump it up to remove the pistons.

Use a dental pick or something to CAREFULLY REMOVE THE SEALS.
DONT SOAK THEM OR CLEAN THEM IN ANYTHING
except for soapy water.
I screwed mine up using varsol.
After the seals are out of the calipers, then you can use solvents to clean the grease outta the calipers.
