Hello !
I just bought my first bike. Honda CB900 Custom 1981, 21k miles, $500.
My name is Mike, I'm 33 years old, married, two children (boy 2y/old and girl 4y/old). I am a computer scientist.
I live in Chicopee, MA. When I was young I sometimes borrowed bike from my friends, but never had my own.
I'm new with motorcycle and all what I've done so far learned from the service manual.
CB900C was not using more than 6 years
I've done so far:
- cleaned the tank and add new fuel (Shell V-Power)
- changed the air filter (OEM)
- changed all 4 sparks (NGK DR8ES)
- changed the subtransmision oil (SAE 80w90 Valvoline) - old one looks like gel !!!
- changed the final drive gear oil (SAE 80w90 Valvoline)
- rebuild brakes (2 fronts and rear) - ughhh...
- changed the brake fluid (DOT3)
- changed the engine oil (twice) and the oil filter (Mobile1 10w40)
- installed new battery
- changed Choke cable
In addition, I have to change tires, check the suspension, check compression, and probably a few other things I forgot to write
The engine starts but it seems that I have to clean Carbs. I'm not sure if I will be able to do by myself ))))
Is there anyone who lives near me, Chicopee (01020) and will be able to help me, maybe someone knows a good mechanic in my area?
Thank you for help ! |

Welcome to here.
I probably would not run Mobile 1. Synthetic is just not a good mix with the clutch. |

Welcome. I used to live in Chicopee Falls with my Grandparents when i was little. Came back to live for a couple years in the late 70's. Loved the broasted chicken at Charlies Lucky Strike. |

Thanks I already checked those links It not looks as bad as I thought
Everything is NEW for me I don't know what works OK, and what is not perfect. That why I'm looking somebody who will check my bike, and tells me what should be fixed/corrected.
Thanks ! |

I was wrong. I used Mobil Super High Millage 10W-40.
Somebody had told me that I should NOT use Synthetic Oil. |

You should probably not run automotive motor oil in a bike with a wet clutch and shims hit by cams. Oil made for diesel engines and motorcycle engines has more zinc (good for our cams) and less friction modifiers that are bad for wet clutches. It's not the synthetic oil that's bad, it's the friction modifiers they put in automotive oil that ruins wet clutches. |
OK, Thanks.
Please, can you give some examples of types of oils that will be the best for my bike ? |

Hi,
I changed oil and filter
I made a short video of my bike.
What do you think?
Is there something wrong with the engine? |
