In the process of possibly buying a 1982 CB750C. It appears to be in great condition except for maybe one thing; the engine sounds just too noisy for me. It's not a clacking valve noise but rather the engine sounds loose and noisy, not quite knocking but almost. I'm hoping to have my Honda tech. come with me to the owner's home to listen to it and see what he thinks. Any thoughts from anyone. Thanks for your time. |

Welcome to here
There is a thread you need to read, before you start asking a lot of questions that are already answered in it, that will help you get a little indoctrinated to our forum. The New Member's Thread (click here) has the forum rules on various matters like permissible picture posting sizes and what bikes we're about and such, some answers to common questions that n00bies always ask about these bikes, links to the Honda Shop Manuals and so forth.
We require that you read that thread, and do the few housekeeping tasks requested there. It helps make everybody's membership here more useful and pleasant, and less redundant for all. It will also help you get a bit more familiar with some of the nuances and culture of membership here.
Be sure to put your DOHC relevant bike model in your sig and turn it on both places (1) in the profile and (2) in the reply box when posting. You'll know more about that after reading the info... Be sure to check it to make sure the sig is actually working, too.
If you have questions about any of this please ask.
If you are seeing this and you did put your signature in, you probably didn't do the second step that's required and click the "Attach signature (signatures can be changed in profile)" box when posting your message. You can edit your posts using the edit button in the upper right hand corner of your post and turn on that checkbox, however. |

Oh, the top ends of these motors make a bit of noise. The cam chains get quite noisy when loose, there is quite a bit of valve train noise, and there is also quite a bit of primary noise from the primary shaft bearings and clutch basket, especially older ones (they're all old now) with hard cushions in the primary shaft damper and clutch basket. Then when the idle carb sync is rough, all that stuff rattles pretty good. |

Thank you for the replies. Your info. re my concern is somewhat comforting. I will make a final decision on whether or not to purchase the bike once my tech. gives his opinion - hopefully it will be as hopeful as your analysis. Until then, I have no pic. or signature to post. |

I know the help desk is usually closed till at least the sig requirement is met but what the hell, this may comfort you even more..
I doubt the engine noise is anything serious but you never know, these engines are noisy anyways at low idle. Most of us here at this forum turn up our idle to 1400-1500 rpm buy turning that little knob that is under and in the middle of the carbs. By doing this most of the noise these engines make smooths out and goes away
Try that when you're checking out the bike and see what happens
Now make sure you put that bike you're thinking of buying in your sig so I don't get yelled at for breaking the rules by the powers that be |

I think I need a break. |

Hmm... It's not that much trouble really, and it lets people know your status.
Changing your profile is pretty easy, and familiarity with the software is worthwhile too. I do wish it was easier, but really, it's not like digging ditches or anything.
I'd rather fill in my profile with that info than use my computer while trying to do a valve adjustment for instance to figure out which shim to use. |

Yeah, sounds silly at first, but if a potential buyer has some tech questions and such, which some have had before purchase, the bike type carries down the thread. Just a simple 'Looking to buy a 750' will do and keep somebody from spending 20 minute opining about shaft drives.....
and yes, you do need a break. We all do.... |
