I noticed an improvement in in my internet a while back on and off. I never dips below 10Mb DL now, but gets over 20 fairly often. About twice what it was a year ago.

TimeWarner has been quietly upgrading it's speed in most markets but oddly not really telling anyone about it. If you have TimeWarner (AKA RoadRunner), you need to reboot your router to get the increased speed...

I'm slow. I know that I don't pay for the maximum bandwidth available; my cable bill is high enough as it is.

Edit: I just checked my bill and I'm paying for 10 Mbps so at least I'm getting what I'm paying for.

I'd be happy if I got those speeds!
Can't get cable where I live so still using phone lines.

Yeah, Time Warner's pricing is ridiculous. I actually replaced my router recently. My last one was old and the wired side was stuffed.

The UK is behind the rest of Europe in general. The US isn't doing so well in bandwidth compared to other countries. This graph is a little old but I think it's still close.

I have a friend here in L.A. with a fiber connection provided by Yahoo, he's a programmer for them. I didn't run speedtest there, but it's insane. I transfered a few hundred MB in a few seconds. All it takes is money, and lots of it.

I went from a phone line connection of 32Kps to wireless of 100Mps. I've been down the last few days since they upgraded their equipment to make even the basic service faster (they just forgot to tell me my new address) Not bad for only 29.95 @ month

Yeah, this is Studio City, Los Angeles. It is an upper middle class neighborhood less than a mile from CBS studios.
You would think we should have fiber optics by now but, no.
Not for our street because the power/phone/cable lines all run through our backyards and the utility people don't have access to get te trucks in there with spools of wire, rigs to work from and what not.
They did not have cable in this neighborhood until 1986.

Phone line. We are an isolated island out in the sticks. All around us have cable options.

Wow! Ray, somehow I missed your post the other day.

That's about as good as it gets here in Studio City. I have a friend that lives out in Northridge where he has Verizon FIOS, fiber to the house. Yahoo pays for a really high speed pipe for him and it's like 5 times faster than here. It really hauls ass if you can find a server that can keep up with it.

My speed varies a bit here, sometimes it drops to around 10Mb/sec, but that's still about 20 times faster than what you had with the crappy DSL. Very Happy

How big is the local network at work? Sometimes they throttle down users on company LANs, so no one person can hog the whole thing and bring everybody's access to a halt.
