New to the forum and I have a problem.

Glad I found this forum. I recently found my dream bike, 1979 750K 10th anniversary edition. I had one 25 years ago, and had to sell it when I got married.
I have been enjoying it for a couple of months, but now I have a problem. Any subject matter experts on electrical out there?
I am only running on the two inside cylinders, I've changed the coils and the pickups coils, I was fixing to change the ignitors, but the ignitors are not the problem ( I switched the plug ins and both ignitors work).
Anybody have a suggestion?

Ron!

Check to make sure you have power to both coils and clean connections. Should have at least, and Sean can correct me if I am wrong, 11.5v with the ignition on and engine not running.

Correct OT - Ideally the black/white leads on the coils should be within 1 volt of the battery + voltage under those conditions.

Compression and valve clearance within spec on those cylinders, Ron? It can be a beyotch troubleshooting a new-old bike; you never know what the PO did (or failed to do) to it before you got it. Evil or Very Mad

Sounds like you're on the right track though.

are you sure the pulsers are okay?

electronics are a bitch

sometimes they fail cold, sometimes hot

sometimes intermittently

Thanks for the input. it just gets better and better.

A pulsor was the problem, bought some used ones and was off a running.

On the FIRST ride, I was a just a few miles from home and stopped to adjust the idle speed, fired it back up and I am on two again.

Now I'm thinking there is a connection issue somewhere, hope to work on it this weekend, right now I am "exercising the wisdom I didn't have in my youth". In other words I'm staying away from it until I reduce my frustration level.

Unplug and spray all your molex connectors on the bike with electrical cleaner and look for any corrosion.

I checked the black/white leads to the coils. One has 11.3, the other has 10.5, is that going to be a conductivity/corrosion issue or something else?

I'll start working on the connectors tomorrow, what's your opinion of di-eletric grease?

That one does not have enough voltage. Start trying to find out why.

You never know................

When I took the cover off, one of the pulsers was just hanging by the wires. the mounting plate was still attached, don't know what substance the factory used to attach it to the plate but it let go.

Anyway, I put the other set on and it fired right up. Got everything buttoned up, gave it a good wash, and went for a little 30 mile ride.

In answer to your question. I like dielectric grease. I find that it displaces moisture, ensures a good electrical connection and inhibits future corrosion. I use it on most electrical connections including fuses, spark plug boots, lighting connections etc. Smile
