Ride motorcycles, not drive them

I am seeing some of your guys signatures and statements containing
"Daily driver"
Well check this out, you can only drive what has a steering wheel. Motorcycles get ridden, not driven.
So all of you guys with the wrong words need to get right and correct your mis-spellings or get clowned even more.

No, that will not do.
It is "Ride a motorcycle and drive a cage" and nothing else.
Think about it carefully now but without having a complete brain lock up.
Did you drive your bicycle when you were a kid? Not just no but, hell no. You rode a bicycle just like you ride a horse or anything you had to throw your leg over to get ON the vehicle, not in the vehicle.
When you are on a vehicle, it is being ridden.
When you are in a vehicle, it is being driven.
Anyone who says anything different is wrong, plain and simply wrong.
Now make the simple admission that you all have been wrong and will make the promise to yourselves that you will better yourselves by using the correct term from now on. Razz

LOL, I can live with "ride" and unless my tongue slips up or I have a brain fart when I'm typing; I usually say "ride". But at the same time I want an admission that this is more like a pet peeve than it is a rule of the English language. I might even categorize it as a faux pas. Smile

Heh, well Americans Bastardized the English language (from Brittan's point of view) and now Hip Hop has done the same thing to it through our eyes. Hell in another 50 years, what is considered English will probably be some freakish incorporation of English, Spanish, Ebonics, and Chinese. We already use words in our language today that weren't there 10 years ago, let alone 50. But I digress...

I still have no problem with using "ride". Unfortunately, I Majored in English and had an interest in linguistics, therefore I over-analyze everything and feel compelled to explore the nuances of a living and progressive language which more or less is defined by the people who speak it.
In other words, no matter how much people try to regulate language usage, spelling, and grammar; they will never stunt a languages ability to grow and for words to change meaning or connotation as long as people are able to decipher that meaning. Widely popular words will hold meaning and those that are not will slowly fade until the only place they are found is in books of the period, and when the books are gone, so is the word.

So I neither agree nor disagree with proper usages of ride vs. drive, I just accept the difference in meaning as it relates to the people using it.

Until Jefferson came along, I believe it was, we didn't even have a standardized way of spelling. Now with computers, absolutely correct spelling, language, and syntax has been necessary for many programming needs, but even that is getting looser nowadays in higher levels.

Well, the push for standardizing language has been around since the first printing presses began circulating books. At the time, it was mostly up to the person with the printing press and the region they were from to determine the proper spelling, but it became cumbersome to do so. Now days there is still no national authority on how things should be spelled and the only reason we are regulated through the education process is in order to keep a consistent thought process which minimizes confusion among the readers.

Yet both the written and spoken languages are constantly changing.
The internet has drastically changed the exposure to alternate spellings for words because people aren't being regulated by an Editor every time something is published online. Between blogs, instant messengers, text messaging, L337 speak, spelling/misspelling, etc. We are seeing how people see their spoken language develop through written means.

1975. Bicycle "rodeo" for us kids. Police department handing out bicycle "DRIVING" liturature. Taught us curtain climebers that we "DROVE" our bicycles, so as to instill a greater sense of responsiblity for our bicycle "DRIVING" actions.

was driving (in a minivan; a HONDA minivan) through the university area this afternoon, scooters zipping here and there "piloted" by students (and some very nice looking ones of the fairer sex, I might add Very Happy

).

not sure if they sit on or in those things...... what the hell to they do - ride, drive, putz, kareem, crash, _______ ?
