Would like to say hello, I am new to DOHC Hondas, but looking at buying one here in the next week.

I have a friend that is selling his 1981 CB750 Custom, its in good shape from what I can tell, but he hasn't drove it (Yes I said drove, from what I can tell that seems to be one of FasterSpiders pet peeves) ok I will rephrase, he has not ridden it since 2003, when he took it in to the local Honda shop and they did a full tune-up on it... It sat for another 3 years or so before it got fired up again, and now its pretty much running on 3 cylinders...

I think its a carb or ignition issue, but leaning towards a carburetor related problem, as gas tends to varnish and clog stuff up...

Its a 1981 CB8750C with 14,000 miles on it, for the price he is asking, I think its worth the time and money to fix it up and ride again. But what are some things I should keep my eyes open for? And how much compression should each cylinder have, I am a very competent mechanic, but my experience is all on pushrod OHV engines, I assume its pretty much the same, just scaled down.

Any pointers and help is much appreciated.

Welcome anyways because I like smartasses being I am the biggest smartass I know.
I am willing to bet the carbs are just dirty and there are no other problems to worry about.
The idle jets are the biggest cause of no fire after a bike has done some serious sitting around un-ridden.
Do the job yourself and keep the bike away from a shop unless it is my shop or my friend Lee's shop in Orange County, California.

yeah it warmed up to a beautiful 70 degrees today, warmest day we have had all year! Too bad the wind is blowing 40mph...

You should get a heavy bike like a CBX then, the wind hardly effects mine at all. And it do get windy here sometimes, like when those hot Santa Ana winds blow and the whole of So Cal catches fire. Rolling Eyes

It is ALWAYS windy here, in fact the power companies have to shut down the wind powered generators frequently because the windspeed exceeds 30mph that often....

I sometimes hate North Dakota, 6months of winter, 2 months of spring, 2 of summer, 2 of fall, and 12 months of psychotic wind!

But on the positive side it keeps the riffraff out!

Good grief! That's ridiculously cold!! (Oh I know, the Canadians think I'm crazy for wearing a jacket when it gets below 60°, but so be it. Very Happy

) I've lived in the SE USA all my life so I only like warm weather.
