Technical forums and the publicly viewable forum (welcome and forum announcements) require moderator privileges to delete posts, so users may occasionally require moderator intervention to help them delete unwanted or duplicate posts.
We clearly don't want users to be able make abusive posts and then delete them before we get to see them and determine if we need to modify their access capability, and this helps to prevent it. We also want to be able to control what posts are publicly viewable from the internet by non members
It wasn't always that way here, but was changed about a year or ago or so, when we locked out the ability to view most of the forum without first joining. We did that when Glenn similarly locked down the F site during a period of particularly high amount of unregistered access to the forums, and as a preventative measure against unwanted outside intrusion. |
