I just wanted to introduce myself as I am a new member. My name is Tim and I live in GA. I am joining this forum because I am considering buying a CS1000 Custom in the next few days (already have a seller) and I want to get as much information as I can.

First question: I read on another post that the CB900 tire sizes were 110/90/19 for the front and 130/90/16 for the back. Are these sizes also for the CB1000?

Second question: What is considered "high mileage" for a CB1000? The bike I'm looking at has ~140K.

140K is way too many miles for me to think about buying anything like a bike.

I'd consider 140 K high milage . But if it were well kept and regularly maintained , it might just be a keeper .

Some of our members have a lot more miles than that on them , but not generally on their bikes ... Very Happy

That's pretty high mileage but maybe there's and engine rebuild or two in there or it's a great price??

The seller has had the bike for 10+ years, and he told me that he has never any trouble with it. He doesn't know the history before he bought it; he bought it from a friend's friend.

He's asking $1K, but the NADA value is somewhere between $350 and $725. I was planning on offering $600 and go from there. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say the cost/benefit is not on the side of buying this. Unless it's in fabulous shape. Maybe look for another one. they are out there.

Oh I don't know....if it's cosmetically nice and performs normally what's the difference between 40K and 140K? (I know 100K). Both might be at or approaching the need for a rebuild but until then you can ride the heck out of it. Parts alone are arguably worth more than $600 so how can you go wrong?

Funny how on these older bikes we quibble over a few hundred and then I talk with my Ducati owning friends and they quibble over several thousand. All a matter of scale...

I would rather buy a high mileage vehicle thats been looked after, then a mid mileage piss run outta machine

85,000? Wow, that engine has to have been freshened up. This bike could be a money pit, when you look at it take a careful look at the frame, any pealing paint or lose paint is a bad sign, could mean a bent frame or fatige. I don't know. Best of luck with this.

Okay, thanks to all of you for your advice. I wish I could post some pics I have, but I don't know how. The bike looked very clean; I did inspect for basic frame fatigue - none noticed. I plan to take a closer look in a couple days and take it for a spin. After reading your notes I may offer him even lower than I originally thought. I may try to find even more published information on high mileage and offer him on the low end of the range that I mentioned earlier.

To post pics, open an account on a hosting site like www.photobucket.com. Upload your pics there, then select the third line under the pic (IMG tag) and paste it in a message here. One good feature on photobucket is you can set it to automatically resize your pics to a max of 640x480 which fits well in forums.

Oh, and good luck with the bike.

welcome rolltide, maybe you could find another motor if the price for the bike is right. just ride it and if it goes out install the other. is it smoking can you hear the cam chain or noises from the gear box

Not at all...that's just it. It is as quiet as a new Shadow 1100 that I've also been looking at. I have decided to take it to the local Honda shop and pay them to do a "bike assessment" for me. I figure it's worth $50 to know whether or not to buy.

Regarding another motor, not that I've been looking for a long time, but these things seem to be fairly difficult to come by. Let me ask a question...I'm a fairly decent shade-tree mechanic when it comes to working on cars/trucks, but I've never worked on motorcycles. Is it that much different? I guess I've been intimidated somewhat to tear one apart. In fact, I scrapped an old bike I used to have because I tore into it and couldn't get it back together (that was 11 years ago).

the cb 1000 has the best looking tail light setup of the custom series

Good job on the pics.

That's got 140K on it? Looks really good! If it sounds/runs smooth you might get a heck of a deal. The only caveat is the high mileage will follow you to resale value, assuming you're an honest guy and why not, but what the hell, get it and enjoy!

The reason we ask that pics not be too big is to keep from scrolling right/left/right/left just to read a message. However, there is a place for large pics to show details, especially when you're considering buying. The best way to post the biggies, IMO, is to start a new thread with something like, "Caution, Large Pics" in the Subject.

BTW, most Honda shops have "kids" working there now and have never even seen one of these. They think loose cam chain noise means the engine is shot! Shocked
