We ask for 10 "Quality Posts" before we will allow members to start listing their spare parts in the "For Sale" area. It seems we need to clarify the nature of what it is we're asking for then.

By the way, before I continue, I'll add that we don't allow advertising here. So, commercial enterprises needn't apply for the purpose of plugging their shops every other post, or pretty much ever... We allow most members to list their spare bike parts, and that's after qualifying with the "quality posts" criteria. We do have a very few, limited deals for our members that are exceptional deals that are unmatched elsewhere that we allow to be posted on a limited basis in the "DOHC for sale" section. We do not however, allow continuous hawking of those deals by the lister in posts in the forum. This forum is nobody's personal sales outlet. And we don't want any question that advice given is done without preferring any particular solution simply on the basis of somebody getting paid off... OKAY then, on to quality posts.

What we mean by a "quality post" isn't necessarily an article with all the answers about motorcycles in it. It needn't even be the detailed answer to somebody's technical question. In fact, if you're not sure what a correct technical answer would be, we'd prefer not have it anyway. But, I would consider a quality post to be a serious question about that technical question, for clarity perhaps, or to make the question plausible. Often times the questions are not asked or framed correctly in the first place, because the asker might not know anywhere near enough about the subject to ask the right question in the first place, or the question assumes facts not in evidence. Sometimes it's not yet time to be able to answer a question because it's obvious that the question is not remotely possible, relevant, or feasible.

Also many times, maybe the question really shouldn't even be asked in the forum, because it is painfully obvious to someone who has followed our directions and read the NMT and the Honda Shop Manual, that the person asking the question has not read the material that is provided here for free, and instead prefers to make everybody read another stupid question about the same things that have been covered all too many times here already. Nobody wants to be asked the mundane questions like "where is the starter clutch?", or "what is a petcock?" by everybody that signs up. That information is covered in the prerequisite NMT information thread and manual, and we try to politely see to it that everybody receives ample opportunity to be aware of it's existence and our requirement that they become familiar with certain material before asking a lot of mundane questions.

So, what we mean by "quality post" is a post being of some substance. Not just a comment or ten like "Nice bike" or "I like that". While it's fine and even encouraged to make such comments and participate in some friendly social interaction and participation with our fellow bikers, it doesn't really account for much in the way of intellectual or inspirational, education provoking thoughts, which is the mainstay of our bond. Similarly, whining about being asked to use the search engine, or go read the factory shop manual doesn't count either.

Questions that are thought out, and evident that some attempt has and is being made by the asker to research and learn, and they're not just coming here to have us figure out everything like some kind of customer service desk are far more appreciated.

I hope that explanation helps clarify the intent of what we are asking of you... and everyone, really. I also hope it doesn't seem too suggestive, as it's not intended to indicate anything towards any particular one person. Our main mission is to have a mutually beneficial bit of education and fun for all. And of course, enjoy our own motorcycles in our own ways, as each one sees fit, and keep them in the best possible condition that we can, and help each other to learn to do the same.

very much so

spring is upon us, so we'll have more new members and the same questions asked over and over again

read the NMT, FSM, then search

many of our signatures have links to valuable info that you'll need to refurbish your new ride

we also have lots of stickies at the beginning of each topic area and in our tips/tricks, tech docs areas

10 quality posts ensures that the member is real, not just a seller in disguise as a real member

The rule is to keep the less desirable types from coming in to merely hawk their wares. Usually those types can't tolerate having to make 10 meaningful posts and they move on. Those that have real interests, will stick around and be cordial for a while. We don't care if they're able to be of help or if they need help, as long as they participate a bit before they up and try to sell their stuff, we feel better about their legitimacy than a total stranger.
