hi guys
I'm nelly [ neil ] I live in Nottingham uk, I'm 50 and have been into bikes forever,i know my way round a spanner and have built a few bikes, what brings you here ? I hear you ask,
ive seen an 82 cb750 custom for sale which I quite fancy owning, the bike is in very good condition by the looks of it, it has a couple of shiity aftermarket parts fitted that I would look at replacing , the ad reads "the bike does run but not quite right" so I suppose my question is ... what should I look out for ,? this would be my first classic 4cyl bike, had fazers,bandits,hornets,gpz900,600 z1000,etc but these were when they were nearly new, does the 82 cb750c suffer from anything I need to know about should I go to have a look
thanks in advance

Welcome to the site nelly ... Smile

I'd have to ask , what kind of not quite right ?

Could be as simple as dirty connections or dirty carbs , maybe the starter clutch bolts need tightening ...

thanks for the reply pd,
I don't know any more details about the bike, its for sale an hour away from me, I'm still trying to get him to budge on price , hes asking £750 what that is in dollars I have no idea, i don't want to waste the guys time if i cant afford it, if i can get him down a bit il then go and have a look at it.
it has aftermarket twin headlights [ yuk ] and twin rear lights [ yuk ] straight bars [ yuk ] it does however have a very nice motad 4 into 1 pipe, and its fitted with pod filters, so its been messed with, I'm quite capable of setting up / cleaning the carbs, balancing, valve clearances etc, but i need to hear it run ,it might be banging and knocking like mad, i will deffo post up as and when i see it..... IF i can get it for what i want to pay, as you can see I'm not too familiar with these motors, i nearly bought a cb700c nighthawk,a few months back, but after a lot of reading up on them i found that they were a bad engine, i just really need to know what they suffer from, instead of posting on here and being told, " they all do that" or "didn't you check that before you bought it" if you know what i mean,
thanks

Pods may well be the reason for 'not quite right' .
The 750 engines are basically all the same , '79 - '83 . They are not a bad engine . Like any older bike , most simply lack proper maintenance .

And , 700 British Pound equals
917.06 US Dollar .
Not too bad a price , depending on how it runs and the general condition of the rest of the machine . Of course , your local market might say something different .

Pods and THESE Keihin CV carbs can be very problematic.

looking at the colour of the exhaust, id say its running lean, so maybe it is only a carburation issue

If it's running lean, do a compression check to make sure valves haven't been compromised. That's what pods can do.

Perfect is 170psi, but you won't see that on a used motor. 150 is probably more reasonable. I'd call anything under 120 poor.

These models are known to have charging system problems so check the voltage on the battery at 3000RPMs. It needs to be over 14Vdc, 14.4Vdc is perfect.

I see a non-stock headlight and handlebar controls in the pic. Be warned that the wiring harness might be modifed. It can be a huge pain to figure out what somebody else has chopped up.
